Background checks yield disturbing results

LTC Liability Monitor, June 9, 2005

Nearly 500 of 5,500 certified nursing assistants (CNAs) surveyed in central Michigan had outstanding arrest warrants, including 85 who were charged with a serious crime such as murder or criminal sexual activity, reported the Mid Michigan television station <i>WJRT-TV, an ABC network affiliate. Attorney General Mike Cox conducted the survey in nursing homes and adult-care facilities in Midland, Bay City, Saginaw, and the Detroit area. Cox called for measures to protect residents in these facilities, including annual background checks, the television station reported. Grand Rapids television station WZZM reported that the study also found that among 618 non-CNA employees surveyed, 58 had outstanding warrants and 68 had past criminal convictions.
