Revenue up for orthopedic practices, but operating costs are even higher, report finds

Physician Practice Advisor, June 1, 2005

The total medical revenue grew for all orthopedic practices by 14.8% from 2001 to 2003; however, operating costs for these practices, depending on their size, rose 17%-23.5%, according to the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) 2004 Cost Survey for Orthopedic Practices.

Mid-sized practices (seven to 12 full-time-equivalent [FTE] physicians) and large practices (13 or more FTE physicians) experienced the largest revenue increases at 13.4% and 13%, respectively, and small practices (six or fewer FTE doctors) experienced 8.8% growth, the press release said.

The revenue hikes were diminished by the high operating costs, however. The report said increases in operating costs were as follows:

  • 17% for small groups
  • 18.9% for mid-sized groups
  • 23.5% for large practices
