Study: Hospitals planning technology upgrade to protect patient records

Healthcare Security Weekly, May 31, 2005

More than 60% of small- to medium-sized hospitals have agreed to bolster their Internet technology security to better comply with the latest Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, according to a recent study conducted by Info-Tech Research.

Only 17.5% of hospitals and health systems are now fully compliant with the regulations, which require facilities to better protect patients' medical records stored on the Internet.

The study revealed that 62% of hospitals will invest in security software, while 57% will purchase security hardware.
