Eleven charged in Chicago identity theft ring

Healthcare Security Weekly, May 16, 2005

An indictment in Chicago last week accuses 11 workers from two Chicago physicians' groups of taking the identities of more than 100 patients and stealing a total of $150,000, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

The alleged ringleaders-an administrative employee at the University of Chicago Physicians' Group and a receptionist at Lincoln Park Family Physicians in Chicago-used bank account information, birth dates, Social Security numbers, addresses, and phone numbers to create new identities and new lines of credit.

Police charged all 11 people with one count of conspiracy to commit identity theft. They also charged 10 of the 11 with identification document fraud and bank fraud.
