Former healthcare worker accused of stealing patient information

Healthcare Security Weekly, May 23, 2005

A former employee of the San Jose Medical Group is accused of stealing computers and a disk containing the medical records of nearly 200,000 patients, The Mercury News in San Jose (CA) reports.

Joseph Nathaniel Harris, a former branch manager at the medical group, confessed to the theft after police picked him up for alleged auto theft last month. Harris sold the disk, along with the computers, to an online buyer. Police are trying to trace the sale and recover the disk, which contains names, confidential medical information, and Social Security numbers.

Harris told the FBI that he did not know the disk contained patient information.
