Connecticut hospital a target of identity theft

Healthcare Security Weekly, May 30, 2005

A Connecticut hospital is under fire after one of its employees stole the identity of three patients and damaged their credit, reports WTNH.com.

Cynthia Watkins, a former employee at Yale New Haven Hospital, accessed the names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of the three patients and opened up new credit accounts. The scam was only uncovered when one victim learned he owed Home Depot $24,000.

Watkins is accused of stealing patient information. Her husband, who was in on the scam, pleaded guilty to identity theft charges last February.

One of the victims died from cancer shortly after Watkins stole his information.
