RI approves hospital-acquired infection bill

Infection Control Monitor, May 20, 2005

The Rhode Island Senate recently approved a bill adding hospital-acquired infections to the factors the Rhode Island Health Care Quality Program reviews, reports Providence Business News.

Healthcare officials want to hold hospitals more accountable for hospital-acquired infections, which are responsible for 88,000 deaths each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates.

Earlier this year, a Rhode Island senator introduced a bill that would require the state Department of Health to collect infection data from hospitals and produce annual reports intended to inform the public and policymakers.

The Hospital Association of Rhode Island balked at the bill, saying the reports could be misleading. It urged lawmakers to track hospital-acquired infections through the Rhode Island Health Care Quality Program instead.
