China: No more human cases of H5N1 infection

Infection Control Monitor, May 27, 2005

Chinese health authorities say recent Internet reports of additional human deaths from H5N1 infection are false, and that the deadly strain of flu virus is under control in their country, reports The Canadian Press.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation after a mailing list operated by the International Society for Infectious Diseases reported that at least six tourists died in the Qinghai Province earlier this month. Chinese health officials reported that the bird flu virus killed 178 migratory geese in the province several weeks ago.

The WHO is concerned that China might not be forthcoming about H5N1 cases. In late 2003 and early 2004, China chose to keep the emergence of another deadly disease-SARS-a secret from the world, according to the WHO.
