Convicted nurse helps authorities

LTC Liability Monitor, May 25, 2005

A nurse who pleaded guilty to killing 24 hospital patients by injecting them with lethal doses of drugs is providing help to authorities who want to prevent similar killings in the future, according to the Associated Press (AP). Charles Cullen is giving the help as part of a plea bargain to avoid the death penalty. He pleaded guilty to killing 24 patients in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, but may be responsible for as many as 40 deaths. He told New Jersey Attorney General Peter Harvey that authorities should develop better detection methods. He suggested using more video surveillance and instituting a swipe card system to track the drugs providers obtain, the AP reported.
