Nurse's aide gets six months on abuse charge
LTC Liability Monitor, May 18, 2005
A Vermont licensed nurse's aide was sentenced to six months in jail for elder abuse related to drug diversion, according to a release from the Vermont Attorney General. Elizabeth Beddie admitted to stealing fentanyl, a powerful narcotic, from a 98-year-old terminally ill resident's pain patch.
Beddie was caught on a surveillance tape stealing the drug from the resident and orally ingesting it. Beddie pled guilty to two counts of abuse of a vulnerable adult, a charge that usually carries jail time of one to three years. She will serve six months in jail, after which she will be on probation.
Under the terms of her probation she will be prohibited from jobs that give her access to narcotics and she must continue substance abuse treatment. She must also reimburse the state Medicaid program $759.17 for the cost of the drugs.
