More Medicare spending leading to lower quality of care

Quality Improvement Monitor, May 12, 2005

States that spend more per Medicare beneficiary tend to rank lower in the quality of care they provide, the head of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission said May 6.

"This inverse relationship might reflect medical practice patterns that favor intensive, costly care," Glenn Hackbarth said during a panel discussion on a new report on the quality and variation of health care provided to Medicare beneficiaries.

Although Medicare is doing a good job of providing the elderly and disabled with access to care, there are still many variations in the quality of care they receive, Hackbarth said.
