PA woman arrested for hospital theft
Healthcare Security Weekly, May 9, 2005
A Pennsylvania woman accused of stealing a wallet and credit cards from a hospital patient two weeks ago is awaiting sentencing in prison, reports the Public Opinion in Chambersburg.
Karen Beam, 48, says she walked into the room of a 79-year-old patient at Chambersburg Hospital and swiped his wallet while he slept. The man's family reported the wallet stolen the day after the theft.
Beam ran up over $1,000 in credit card charges. She was arrested when employees at KMart-where she charged a $591.43 bill-picked her out of a photo lineup.
Police say Beam made 11 unsuccessful attempts to withdraw cash from ATMs.
