Computers containing patient information stolen from medical group

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 11, 2005

The San Jose Medical Group is notifying 185,000 current and former patients that their personal information may have been on computers stolen during a recent break-in, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

Two Dell computers were taken from a locked area within the physician group's administrative offices on March 28, according to CEO Ernie Wallerstein. The personal information contained names, addresses, medical information, and social security numbers.

There is no evidence the data stolen has been misused. Police say there are no suspects.
