Oxygen leak forces hospital evacuation

Healthcare Security Weekly, April 25, 2005

An oxygen leak at the base hospital at Offutt Air Force Base (NE) last Thursday prompted officials to evacuate about 500 staff members and 30 patients, The Associated Press reports.

Officials cordoned off a two-block area around the hospital so that emergency personnel could clean up the leak of the liquid oxygen, which is stored in specialized tanks because it boils at negative 297.3 degrees Fahrenheit.

The hospital uses liquid oxygen to treat patients, and also for some hospital equipment.

It was unclear how much oxygen leaked out. The tanks contain 600 gallons of oxygen.
