HIPAA security deadline passes

Healthcare Security Weekly, May 5, 2005

The deadline for facilities to complete the most recent security requirement of the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) passed last week.

But government regulators have no way to determine how many facilities complied with the rule, which mandates that all hospitals install better security practices to protect electronic patient records.

Facilities are not required to provide proof of compliance.

The deadline applied to healthcare providers and employee-sponsored healthcare firms.

A HealthCare Information and Management Systems Society study last winter revealed that 18% of healthcare companies were compliant to the HIPAA standard.
