JCAHO warns of fake surveyors in hospitals

Infection Control Monitor, March 18, 2005

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) warned hosptials by e-mail last week that an east coast and west coast hospital reported fake surveyors arriving at their facility. The alleged surveyors arrived around 3 a.m. requesting to see different areas of the hospital. Both hospital staff questioned the surveyors, who left.

The JCAHO asks that when surveyors arrive at the facility, hospital staff request to see identification badges. In addition, any unannounced JCAHO surveryor visit will also have a letter addressed to the head of the organization signed by Russell Massaro, MD, executive vice president of Accreditation Operations for the Commission.

If a similar experience occurs in your facility, please call: 630/792-5757.
