FDA approves new pertussis vaccine

Infection Control Monitor, May 6, 2005

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration this week approved the first combination vaccine to boost immunization against pertussis.

The vaccine, which will be marketed as Boostrix by GlaxoSmithKine, is a Tetanus Toxoid, Reduced Diphtheria Toxoid, and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine, Adsorbed.

Boostrix induces an antibody response to the pertussis component of the vaccine.

Pertussis, which is also known as "whooping cough," is a highly contagious respiratory ailment. It is sometimes deadly in young children.
