UPMC serving more than 1,000 diabetes patients online

EHR Connection, April 28, 2005

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's (UPMC) Internet portal, which allows diabetes patients to remotely communicate with their physicians, has grown to include more than 1,000 patients using the system, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Patients can communicate with their primary care physicians as well as their office medical staff, schedule routine appointments online, receive alerts about appointments and other health reminders, and submit requests for prescription refills and referrals, UPMC Web site reports. Patients are alerted when it is time for their check-ups and routine tests and are able to access their medical records and links to diabetes news and lifestyle recommendations.

UPMC has committed approximately $500 million to develop IT initiatives, including its eRecord program-of which HealthTrak is a part-that includes electronic clinical applications that allows doctors, nurses, and other caregivers to access patient information.
