Brailer speaks at CalRHIO summit

EHR Connection, April 28, 2005

National Coordinator for Health Information Technology David Brailer, MD, PhD, spoke last week during the first summit of a newly formed California regional health information organization (CalRHIO), outlining some of the initiative's challenges and opportunities, reports the Sacramento Business Journal. Brailer said the key goals for the group include "building public trust, creating secure privacy protections, harmonizing security techniques in disparate organizations, and aligning financial incentives."

CalRHIO is funded by $1 million grants from Sutter Health, Kaiser Permanante, and the WellPoint Foundation. The California Healthcare Foundation and the University of California also sponsor the effort. The group plans to encourage business, healthcare, and policy leaders to create private and public policy agendas and funding for data exchange and IT investment. Goals include providing direct access to personal health records, identifying the infrastructure needed for data exchange, and linking hospital emergency departments across the state, the organization's Web site, www.calrhio.org, reports.
