Illinois town prohibits sex offenders in nursing homes
LTC Liability Monitor, April 22, 2005
In an attempt to protect the community from the residents of one facility, Chicago-area officials passed an ordinance this week prohibiting local nursing homes from housing sex offenders, the Chicago Tribune reported. Evergreen Park, IL village board members and Mayor Jim Sexton unanimously passed the order forbidding the admission of sex offenders in facilities and establishing fines of up to $1000 for each day the law is violated.
The action comes in response to a police sweep of the Emerald Park Nursing Home that found 11 registered and unregistered sex offenders living there. So far in April, three residents have been arrested for charges related to being sex offenders-two for failing to register and one for being in a park near children-and two others have been arrested on unrelated warrants. Emerald Park administrator Yosef Maystel was charged with reckless conduct for allowing a sex offender near a children's park. Lawmakers and the Illinois Department of Public Health are working to revoke the license of the Emerald Park nursing home, the Tribune reported.
