Louisiana lawmaker regulates, owns nursing home

LTC Liability Monitor, April 22, 2005

The same man who heads up the legislative committee in charge of regulating nursing homes in Louisiana is the owner of one, the New-Orleans Times-Picayune reported. Last year, Senator Joseph McPherson became the chairman of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee, the state office that oversees nursing homes. He is also the majority owner of the Maison de Lafayette, a facility that has been cited for actual harm to 21 residents since 1999.

McPherson told the Times-Picayune the majority of the infractions took place before he took an active part in the management of the facility, at a time when he was chiefly just an investor. The newspaper found 10 citations for actual harm since McPherson started managing the home in 2000.
