ACEP: Physicians should have say in future measures

Quality Improvement Monitor, April 21, 2005

Current hospital quality measures are improving patient care, but many emergency-medicine physicians believe they should have input in developing future measures to reflect the realities of their work, according to a survey from the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Ninety-nine percent of all emergency physicians believed it was important or critical for emergency physicians to help determine any proposed quality measures in the future, the survey said. Ninety-six percent said it is essential that the measures be applicable to the practice of emergency medicine.

A majority of physicians surveyed said the current measures, such as providing aspirin to heart attack patients within four hours of arrival, are appropriate.

The college conducted the online survey of 1,076 members between March 28 and April 5.
