Nurses oppose medication aide bill

LTC Liability Monitor, April 6, 2005

Registered nurses (RNs) employed in Illinois nursing homes are voicing their opposition to a proposed bill that would enable certified nurse assistants (CNAs) to administer medication to patients, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The legislation is intended to lighten the burden on nursing home RNs, who are responsible for almost all clinical care and all medication administration. RNs, however, say giving medication involves much more than just handing out pills-it's a vital part of the care process and allows nurses to gauge and adapt to changes in residents' conditions.
