CareFirst BCBS will pay docs to use EHRs
EHR Connection, April 4, 2005
CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has joined Bridges to Excellence, a pay-for-performance program that rewards physicians who install electronic records systems, the health plan reports. According to its Web site, CareFirst is the first health plan in the nation to fund physician incentives through a three-year $3.6 million program beginning this year.
The plan, which serves 3.2 million members in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, will pay up to $50 per CareFirst patient and $20,000 annually to reward physicians who meet National Committee for Quality Assurance's (NCQA) Physician Practice Connections criteria, which promotes the use of information technology to improve patient care. Bridges to Excellence is backed by insurers, CMS, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, the NCQA, General Electric, Ford Motor Co., and other major companies.
