Illinois considers medication-aide bill
LTC Liability Monitor, March 30, 2005
Lawmakers in Illinois are considering a bill that would allow certified nursing assistants (CNAs) to administer medication to nursing home, assisted living, and supportive living facility residents, the Freeport Journal Standard reported. House Bill 822 would amend a state law that requires registered nurses (RNs) to pass medication and permit CNAs to do so under an RN's supervision and after they undergo a special training program.
Advocates of the bill say it will free up RNs for more important clinical care, help address the state's nursing shortage, and provide career advancement for CNAs. The legislation is currently being debated in the House of Representatives, and needs approval by the House and Senate, the Journal Standard reported.
