JCAHO warns of more phony surveyors

Healthcare Security Weekly, March 14, 2005

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) warned by e-mail last week that another hospital, located in the Midwest, had a fake surveyor attempt access in its facility. The alleged surveyor arrived at 8 a.m. and told staff that he didn't require a JCAHO identification. The phony surveyor fled when staff pressed for more information.

Two weeks ago, two hospitals reported visits by fake surveyors in the early morning.

The JCAHO asks that when surveyors arrive at the facility, hospital staff request to see identification badges. In addition, any unannounced JCAHO surveryor visit will also have a letter addressed to the head of the organization signed by Russell Massaro, MD, executive vice president of Accreditation Operations for the Commission.

If a similar experience occurs in your facility, please call: 630/792-5757.
