Department of Homeland Security launches info-sharing pilot program

EHR Connection, March 29, 2005

The Department of Homeland Security last week launched a pilot program to provide information-sharing software and other technology to first responders in rural areas, TechnologyDaily reports. The pilot--the Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program--is being tested even though President Bush requested it be eliminated from next year's budget.

Officials have allocated $32 million for the program for 2005 but will not request funding for next year until the department reviews the pilot's success.

The pilot program is divided into two stages. The first stage begins this month with officials allocating $8 million for "equipment and specialized training already under contract." The second stage, set for May or June, will call for $24 million to fund "new items and equipment purchased by the department," TechnologyDaily reports.
