Is HIM ready for EHR?
EHR Connection, March 22, 2005
Even though facilities are implementing EHRs at various speeds, HIM professionals report they are personally ready for an electronic environment, according to American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) survey respondents. At least 42% of surveyed HIM professionals report partial or extensive EHR system implementation at their facilities. "The expertise of HIM professionals will become even more critical as the healthcare moves further into the information age. It's encouraging to see the majority of our members are prepared," Linda Kloss, RHIA, CAE, AHIMA's chief executive officer, said in a company report. The survey also identified the top three most effective steps to build an effective EHR:
- implementation of a clinical support systems
- clinical documentation
- clinical data repository
Of the 30% of respondents who believe they are less ready for an electronic environment, 56% require more process reengineering skills; 53% need more database technologies skills; and 48% need more project management skills.
