Background checks for doctors may become the standard in Nevada

Physician Practice Advisor, March 23, 2005

The recent arrest of a Las Vegas physician has inspired Nevada lawmakers to rescind a 2003 law change and make it a requirement for all Nevada physicians to undergo criminal background checks.

The Associated Press reported last week that a new bill intorduced
into the Nevada Assembly calls for background checks for all new physicians, which would be paid for by the doctors themselves as part of their licensing fees. The law would also require doctors currently in practice to undergo the checks.

The new legislation counters a 2003 licensing board provision that prevents licensing boards from taking action against its members who are convicted of felonies, unless those felonies are directly related to their profession.

Lawmakers seized upon this issue following the recent arrest of Las Vegas
pediatric physician David Evans on charges of child molestation.
