Massive weight loss leads to gain for body contouring
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 22, 2005
People who successfully achieve massive weight loss are contributing to a significant increase in body contouring procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Nearly 56,000 body contouring procedures were performed in 2004, contributing to the 77% increase in total body contouring procedures seen over the last five years.
"There has been an explosion in the demand for body contouring surgery, and I think this can be explained by the rapidly increasing numbers of patients who have dramatic weight loss," said ASPS President Scott Spear, MD, on the ASPS Web site.
A majority of the 106,000 body contouring procedures performed in 2004 were breast procedures (76,000). Lower body lifts saw 72% growth in 2004 compared to 2003, with 9,000 procedures. Thigh lifts were up 45% in 2004 compared to 2003, with 8,000 procedures performed.
