Abortion clinics may become ASCs

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 16, 2005

A bill that would redefine abortion clinics in Missouri as ASCs won first-round approval in the Missouri House last week.

Abortion-rights supporters are worried the bill could force abortion clinics in two cities (Columbia and Springfield) to close due to the proposed standards that some doctors may not be able to meet.

If passed, the bill would "require abortion doctors to obtain hospital privileges within 30 miles of their clinics to continue performing surgeries," according to The Kansas City Star.

By redefining abortion clinics as ASCs, the clinics would be subject to state standards for surgery facilities. The bill would also make it a felony for anyone to accompany a minor across state lines to receive an abortion without parental permission.
