Compromise reached on "granny-cam" bill
LTC Liability Monitor, March 9, 2005
The two sides of a heavily debated Arkansas nursing home surveillance bill have reached a compromise on the details of the legislation, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. A revised version of the Willie Mae Ryan Nursing Home Resident Protection Act will go before the Arkansas House Committee on Public Health, Welfare and Labor next week. An earlier version was dropped after intense opposition from the nursing home industry.
The so-called "granny-cam" bill allows families of nursing home residents to install surveillance cameras in their family members' rooms. Opponents and sponsors of the bill were unwilling to give the Gazette details of the compromise, but said it included specifics on how the video could be used in court cases.
