Ex-husband sues nursing home, vocational program
LTC Liability Monitor, March 9, 2005
The ex-husband of an Arkansas nursing home resident who was crushed to death by a bus has sued the facility at which she resided and the company that owned the bus, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Lincoln Knight filed the wrongful death suit against Arkansas Health Center in Benton, and Pathfinder, Inc., a vocational program that was under contract with the facility. Mary Knight was killed when the Pathfinder bus she had been a passenger on ran her over after dropping her and other residents off at the Pathfinder facility.
Ms. Knight had been involuntarily admitted to Arkansas Health Center with dementia, bipolar disorder, and alcoholism after she had been judged incompetent. Mr. Knight says that despite state officials' contention that his ex-wife may have committed suicide, Arkansas Health Center and Pathfinder, Inc., are responsible for the death because they failed to properly supervise her. The suit also addresses a 2003 incident in which Ms. Knight was left unsupervised and was allegedly sexually abused by another resident.
