AMA proposes guidelines for pay-for-performance programs
Physician Practice Advisor, March 9, 2005
The American Medical Association (AMA) last week announced a set of guidelines for the implementation of a formalized pay-for-performance program for physicians.
In a press release posted on the AMA Web site, AMA Secretary John H. Armstrong, MD said, "Pay-for-performance programs may serve as a positive force in the healthcare industry if the programs are designed primarily to improve the effectiveness and safety of patient care."
To that end, the AMA feels it has isolated five main components of an effective and well-structured pay-for-performance plan. The organization feels any successful plan must ensure quality of care for patients, foster the relationship between patient and physician, offer voluntary physician participation, use accurate data and fair reporting, and provide fair and equitable program incentives.
