Efforts fail in Colorado to stop physician credentialing restrictions

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 8, 2005

A tie vote means legislation prohibiting hospitals in Colorado from restricting the credentialing of physicians with an ownership interest in an ASC has failed, the AAASC stated on its Web site.

According to the draft legislation, the bill stated that "a hospital shall not discriminate in the application process, or the award, retention, or renewal of medical staff membership, clinical privileges, or other credentials involving a licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist on the basis of a direct or indirect financial interest held by the health care practitioner or the practitioner's family member in a health care facility, equipment, or another entity that provides health care goods, services, technology, or treatment."

The Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Association had lobbied for the bill, short titled "Hospital Staff Privileges."
