America split on EHR v. privacy risks
EHR Connection, March 7, 2005
Only 29% of surveyed adults are currently aware of a national EHR initiative, the Wall Street Journal Online reports, but 48% percent of respondents consider the benefits of an EHR system to offset privacy risks. Forty-seven percent believe privacy risks outweigh the benefits of an EHR. The February survey included 1,012 adults.
The survey found approximately 68% of respondents cite the following concerns:
- poor data security could leak private information
- health information could be shared without their knowledge
- computerization could increase medical errors
- existing federal privacy rules will be minimized for the sake of efficiency
