Lawmakers consider "granny-cam" bill

LTC Liability Monitor, February 23, 2005

Arkansas legislators will consider a bill this week authorizing the use of surveillance cameras in nursing homes, the Associated Press (AP) reported. The Willie Mae Ryan Act, named after a nursing home resident beaten to death in 2003, is the third such piece of legislation to go before Arkansas lawmakers since 2001. The earlier measures failed to pass, but advocates hope that by attaching Ms. Ryan's face to the bill, the chance of passage will improve.

The act calls for allowing monitoring devices in the rooms of nursing home residents if they or their families want them. Critics of the bill say it could increase the threat of lawsuits against nursing homes, the AP reported.
