State expands background checks

LTC Liability Monitor, February 23, 2005

Alaska is beefing up its background check policies for personal care workers in hopes of preventing abuse, the Anchorage [AK] Daily News reported. Under the new standards, long-term care facilities must check state and federal criminal records and compare the fingerprints of licensed employees to those in state and national databases. The new standards require facilities to check state records every two years and national records every six years.

These steps will bring the state long-term care industry up to the standards maintained by assisted living facilities in Alaska. There is currently a law in place that requires Alaska nursing homes to run background checks, but the new standards will create uniformity in how information is collected and used, according to AP.
