FDA hopes for no drug safety oversights with committee

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 22, 2005

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the creation of an independent board designed to oversee drug safety management.

The board, called the Drug Safety Oversight Board, is designed to "enhance the independence of internal deliberations and decisions regarding risk/benefit analyses and consumer safety," according to a fact sheet posted on the FDA Web site.

In addition to the board, the FDA also announced plans to establish new communication channels designed to provide targeted drug safety information to the public. The FDA said it would like to create a new Web page, called "Drug Watch," for new data and risk information.

As the Web page and communication channels are developed, the FDA said it will seek public comment on how to manage concerns associated with releasing information prior to any regulatory action.
