New mom breaches infant security system

Healthcare Security Weekly, February 14, 2005

A new mother beat a Salt Lake City hospital's high-tech security system last week when she took her baby and left the hospital within hours of giving birth, station KUTV reported.

The new mother walked out of St. Mark Hospital's door without anyone noticing and without triggering the security system.

St. Mark's hospital places ankle bracelets on all newborns. The bracelets should trigger an alarm if a baby is removed from the building. The alarm notifies staff and locks down the building.

"We're investigating how she circumvented it. We do know the device on the baby was tampered with," hospital spokesperson Deb Reiner told station KUTV. "We're investigating and we'll ensure that it is fixed in the future."

It is unclear why the new mother left the hospital.
