MD program to speed voluntary physician adoption of e-Rx

EHR Connection, February 21, 2005

Twenty-seven of the leading healthcare organizations in Maryland have formed the Maryland Safety Through Electronic Prescribing Initiative (STEP). The initiative aims to accelerate the voluntary adoption of e-prescribing among physician practices in Maryland and to demonstrate national e-Rx leadership. STEP will provide physicians with classes, workshops, Web conferences, case studies, and white papers to educate them about the benefits of e-prescribing, reports InformationWeek.

According to a STEP Initiative report, 70% of Maryland pharmacies are able to communicate electronically with physician practices, and widespread physician adoption is the next goal. Participating stakeholders include Aetna, CareFirst, BlueCross BlueShield, CVS, Eckerd, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, John Hopkins Community Physicians, Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, RxHub, and SureScripts.
