Colorado's ASC association trying to protect physician owners

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 9, 2005

The Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Association has introduced legislation seeking to protect physicians with an ownership interest in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) from prohibiting hospitals looking to restrict their credentialing.

The bill calls upon hospitals not to discriminate "in the application process, or the award, retention, or renewal of medical staff membership, clinical privileges, or other credentials involving a licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist on the basis of a direct or indirect financial interest held by the health care practitioner or the practitioner's family member in a health care facility, equipment, or another entity that provides health care goods, services, technology, or treatment."

The bill defines "financial interest" as ownership, investment, or compensation arrangement.
