Academy requiring accreditation for cosmetic surgeons

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 8, 2005

If you've been lifting foreheads or putting implants in buttocks in an unaccredited facility, and you plan to apply to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, that will have to change.

The Academy has announced that, as of January 2007, Fellow applicants for membership must show that they are scheduling cosmetic patients in an accredited facility.

"This is an excellent example of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery maintaining their mission of patient safety," said President-Elect Claude H. Crockett Jr., MD, in a statement issued January 26, 2005. "The health and welfare of our patients is our number one priority and we are proud of this recent decision."

The accreditation may include state healthcare agencies, Medicare approved facilities, the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare, or the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare.
