President Bush speaks in Cleveland to promote EHRs

EHR Connection, February 8, 2005

The president referenced electronic medical records in his State of the Union address for the second consecutive year. As part of his campaign to promote widespread adoption of HIT, President Bush spoke at the Cleveland Clinic, urging hospitals and physicians to implement EHRs. The clinic is helping the government develop electronic record standards.

"I think the government financial backing and the president's day at Cleveland Clinic show the overall importance of implementing electronic health records," says Tom Smith, chief information officer at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in Evanston, IL-one of the first health systems to go completely paperless. "[EHR] is something that is here to stay and it is going to happen."
