Hundreds of sex offenders living in nursing homes
LTC Liability Monitor, February 2, 2005
A nursing home watchdog group found 380 registered sex offenders living in nursing homes in 37 states in December, the San Jose [CA] Mercury News reported. Of those, 66 offenders were living in facilities in California, according to the study by A Perfect Cause, an Oklahoma-based elder-care advocacy group. The California Department of Corrections told the Mercury News the number is actually higher. They say there are 89 registered sex offenders living in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities in the state.
Corrections officials are not required to notify administrators of their residents' criminal backgrounds, nor are administrators required to notify other residents or their families if they are aware that they are housing a sex offender, reported the Mercury News. In 2002 and 2004, some former sex offenders were arrested for allegedly raping their fellow nursing home residents.
