AG warns against English-only policies
LTC Liability Monitor, February 2, 2005
Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas Reilly issued an advisory opinion warning state nursing homes against implementing English-only policies, reported Medicine & Law Weekly. Reilly has expressed concern over the practice, which prohibits nursing home employees from speaking their native languages, even on breaks and when speaking on the phone. He calls it discrimination, and a potential civil rights violation.
Advocates say as many as 80% of nursing aides are Haitian immigrants, according to Medicine & Law Weekly. Reilly is urging nursing homes to train workers in their native tongues and to put language policies in writing.
