Governor signs abuse bill
LTC Liability Monitor, January 26, 2005
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has signed a law increasing civil and criminal penalties for abuse of elderly and disabled individuals, the Massachusetts Extended Care Federation (MECF) reported. The law also gives the state attorney general the ability to bring a civil suit against anyone who knowingly allows another to abuse or neglect a nursing home resident.
Massachusetts already conducts criminal background checks on all direct care workers and provides training in abuse prevention, according to MECF. State Attorney General Thomas Reilly proposed the legislation last year as he pursued an indictment against a nurse aide for abuse and neglect in a Franklin, MA, facility.
