Arkansas aims to ban smoking on medical facility grounds

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, January 25, 2005

Smokers in Arkansas may find this news a drag: A bill introduced in the state could prohibit the use of tobacco products on the grounds of all medical facilities.

While the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Accrediation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) require ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) to implement no-smoking policies except in designated areas, this bill would eliminate these areas and allow the facility to report a violator to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

The bill, introduced January 20, 2005, justified the proposed ban by stating that direct smoking of tobacco and indirect smoking of tobacco through inhaling the smoke of those who are smoking nearby are major causes of preventable diseases and death, and that prohibiting tobacco use in medical facilities will decrease the use of tobacco and exposure to harm from tobacco.
