Prisoner escapes hospital custody

Healthcare Security Weekly, January 13, 2005

A prisoner visiting University Medical Center in Jackson, MS, last week escaped security custody, channel WLBT reported.

Jeffrey Elkins went to the hospital complaining of back pain. Elkins was wearing handcuffs and shackles when he walked out the hospital's door undetected. A private security guard hired to watch Elkins left him alone for 15 minutes when he escaped, WLBT reported.

For nearly seven hours, Elkins alluded authorities, but was later found in bushes on hospital property.

This isn't the first time Elkins escaped from authorities. Only weeks ago, Elkins opened the back window of a police cruiser and escaped, Jackson Police Chief Don Byington told WLBT. The officers couldn't chase him because of suspects being held in the cruiser.

Elkins' recent escape from the hospital has prompted changes in the police department's policies.

Hospital officials declined to comment.
