AHCA backs fire safety legislation

LTC Liability Monitor, January 12, 2005

The American Health Care Organization (AHCA) is urging Congress to pass the Nursing Facility Fire Safety Act this session, according to an AHCA press release. The bill, introduced last session by Rep. John Larson (D-CT), would guarantee that every nursing home in the country be equipped with automatic sprinkler systems within five years. The legislation calls for the creation of Medicare and Medicaid funding to pay for new sprinkler systems. The proposal would also allow providers to amortize the cost of retrofitting over five years, including facilities that have updated their systems since 2003. Renewed interest in the bill comes with the release of a report by the International Association of Fire Chiefs on fire safety in health care facilities, according to AHCA.
